What kinds of digital photography memory cards are available?

I am currently in the market for a digital camera.
I see that there are a number of different digital memory cards available.
Can you tell me what they are? What are the differences between them? And what the advantages and disadvantages of each different kind?

they all do the same thing, they store 0’s and 1’s.

theres SD, compact flash. multi media, memory stick and a few others

some brands are more reliable than others, some write at faster speeds, some have 2gb some 8gb and some more or less

worry about the camera first, cards are incidental

a

Compact Flash ( CF )
Secure Digital ( SD )

And The List Goes On And On…

There’s no real difference in them besides the obvious, their physical size. Each type of memory card has different capacities. Manufacturers use a smaller/larger size ( physically ) card depending on what space they have left on the camera. There’s no difference in quality. Memory card is just a place to store your photos. Some are slower than others, but other than that, there’s not difference.

Having recently been in the market for a digital camera to replace my old Film SLR i hope my advice helps. There are numerous types of storage devices ie memorycards compact flashes etc. The most popular being the SD card, it comes in various sizes 1Gb 2Gb 4Gb etc. They also come with adaptors so they can be used in your Phone (tiny) Camera (medium) or Computer (large)
However, not all types of camera use the same Card type.
If you are in the market for a Good digital Camera as most types of card cost the same. only paying for the size increases the cost.
I would be more concerned with getting the best camera/lens/mexapixel size in my price range. Either compact or SLR. Then buy the memory card to suit the camera. Lastly as well as size of memory thebear in mind the speed of the card. IE how fast they transfer the Data of the image taken (photo) to the card. buy the highest speed you can afford. this allows you to take photo after photo quicker. ie in sports.

All the above information is good stuff.

Here is the list.

CF (Compact Flash) = used by all professional DSLR’s
SD / SDHC (Secure Digital … High Capacity) = used by all but three P&S digital cameras and some entry level DSLR cameras
xD (picture cards) = used by Olympus and some Fujifilm cameras
Memory Stick = used only by Sony products.

The advantage of CF and SD cards is there are so many made, their cost per GB is sometimes half of the other two card types.

Most compact digital cameras use SD or SDHC (high capacity SD) memory cards.
Olympus and Fujifilm use xD (even though some of the newer Fuji cameras also use SD).
dSLR cameras use CF (compact flash) and one or two now use SD or SDHC.
Sony cameras ONLY use Memory Stick (that’s Sony, for ya).

If buying a compact digital camera that uses SD or SDHC e.g. Canon ;-) buying a fast card is the better option. Don’t try to save yourself a few dollars by buying a cheap, standard speed (Class 2) card. Instead you should buy a fast card (Class 4 or Class 6) if you want optimum camera performance, want to shoot movies and also want fast transfer of images/files to your computer.

You can’t go wrong with Sandisk Extreme III ( Class 6) or Ultra II (Class 4).
